Nebula Class The Nebula Class was designed as a smaller, more numerous counterpart to the Galaxy class. The first one was commissioned in 2350's and the class has been the backbone of personnel and supply transport ever since. No other class is currently on the design boards to fulfill this essential role, with most efforts going towards smaller more combat oriented ships. The most obvious comparison to the Nebula is of course the Galaxy class. The Nebula is more compact, giving up some warp-drive efficiency for greater shield strength due to the smaller area needing to be shielded. Almost two hundred meters shorter, one hundred narrower, and about fifteen shorter, the Nebula gives up surprisingly little in space, with identical saucer and nearly identical engineering hulls, the majority of the space lost is simply nacelle placement, and a short neck area between the saucer and engineering hulls. It gives up about one fifth firepower over the Galaxy as the base model, given both classes are at the same refit cycle. The Nebula class also cannot separate and reattach under its own power, but in an emergency the saucer can be detached from the engineering section. However, it may only be reattached with the assistance of a starbase, and lacking warp engines, scuttling in the middle of space would mean permanent abandonment of the saucer section. Most of the components between the Galaxy and Nebula class were designed to be interchangeable. But with the retirement of the Galaxy class and its replacement by the more formidable Sovereign class, the interchangeability has been less useful than first anticipated.
